On January 31st, students from Seminar for Practical Interpreting (通訳実務演習) finished their course by giving a tour of famous sites in Hamanomachi. They took turns describing the history of important historical sites downtown as well as providing other small anecdotes or stories.
Prior to the actual tour, students prepared by researching each site and preparing the necessary vocabulary and grammar structures often used for tour guiding.The tour was given all in English. The sites visited were Spectacles Bridge, Koufuku Temple, Nakadori Shopping Street, and Dejima.
They were joined by special guests Professor Emeritus Chizuko Suzuki and Yuko Tachibana, a government-licensed guide interpreter in Nagasaki Prefecture who had joined us 2 weeks prior in a special class to introduce guiding techniques to the students.
Ms. Tachibana has guided many tourists around Nagasaki using English and is a graduate of the English and Information Sciences Department at Nagasaki Junshin Catholic University. As the students introduced each site, Ms. Tachibana was on hand to help students with tour guiding skills and give hints and tips when necessary. Her support was much appreciated, and the students were grateful for her guidance. We look forward to continuing providing this kind of real-world experience with Ms. Tachibana in future courses.
1月31日、「通訳実務演習」を履修する学生たちが、浜町地区の名所を巡るツアーを実施し、本コースを締めくくりました。学生たちは交代で、市中心部にある重要な史跡の歴史を解説したほか、さまざまな小話や逸話を紹介しました。
実際のツアーに先立ち、学生たちは各スポットについてリサーチを行い、ツアーガイドで頻繁に使われる語彙や文法構造を習得するなどの準備を重ねてきました。ツアーの案内はすべて英語で行われ、訪問先は眼鏡橋、興福寺、中通り商店街、そして出島でした。
今回のツアーには、特別ゲストとして鈴木千鶴子名誉教授と、長崎県公認の通訳案内士である橘優子氏が同行してくださいました。橘氏には、ツアーの2週間前にも特別講義の講師として、学生たちにガイド技術を伝授していただいています。
長崎純心大学人文学部英語情報学科の卒業生である橘氏は、これまで英語を用いて多くの観光客を長崎案内してこられました。学生が各スポットを紹介する際、橘氏は傍らでガイドスキルのサポートにあたり、必要に応じてヒントやアドバイスを与えてくださいました。その手厚いご支援に、学生たちは深く感謝しています。今後も橘氏のご協力のもと、このような実践的な経験の場を提供し続けていきたいと考えています。
